In this exercise, we aim to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard. However, we prioritise certain strings which we are more likely to use as root notes, so we start from string 6.
Procedure: Start on C on the given root note. Then play up the minor pentatonic pattern to the right from that root to the top note of that pattern. Descend via the minor pentatonic pattern to the left of the root note. Once this is completed, change to the next key in the circle of fifths (see diagram below right). Once you've moved around all 12 keys effortlessly, you're ready to go on to learning the next string. There is a video demo below which you should watch to get an idea. Level 1Strings 6 and 1 roots - Pattern 1 to the right, Pattern 5 to the left.
Level 2String 5 roots - Pattern 4 to the right, Pattern 3 to the left.
Level 3String 4 roots - Pattern 2 to the right, Patter
Level 4The last two remaining strings -
String 3 roots - Pattern 5 to the right, Pattern 4 to the left. String 2 roots - Pattern 3 to the right, Pattern 2 to the left. If you've completed Level 4, then congratulations, you know every single note on the guitar fretboard, and more impressively, you can use each one as a root. Well done! |
